WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON MICROBLADING MISTAKES AND HOW TO CORRECT THEM?

Microblading is a popular semi-permanent makeup technique that can enhance and reshape eyebrows, but it requires precision and skill to achieve realistic and long-lasting results. As a microblading artist, you must be aware of the common issues that can arise during and after the procedure, including those related to product quality and eyebrow design.

Here Monika Ludwiczak, Co-Founder of Everlasting Brows discusses some of the most common microblading mistakes and provides expert tips on how to address them to ensure successful outcomes.

Uneven Pigmentation

Uneven pigmentation is one of the most common issues with microblading. It can occur due to several reasons such as poor product application, unstable pigments, improper aftercare or something as innocent as not shaking your pigments well before the procedure. To avoid this, use premium blades and high-quality pigments to ensure the longevity of the results. Moreover, make sure to educate your clients on proper aftercare procedures, including avoiding excessive sweating and sun exposure, as well as using gentle skincare products that don't contain abrasive or exfoliating ingredients.

Poor Product Quality

Poor quality products not only pose a threat to your clients’ wellbeing (think of blades that haven’t been sterilised) but also prevent you as an artist from creating great results. Blades that are not sharp enough fail to create crisp natural looking strokes. Unstable pigments cause poor retention or 'rainbow effect' fading. Products that are not designed for skin use cause irritation or allergies. It is important to use only safe, certified products to ensure the wellbeing of your clients and safeguard your reputation.

Eyebrow Design Issues

One of the worst scenarios that can happen is when the client is completely unhappy with the final results. Eyebrow design issues can result in the need for additional touch-up appointments or even removal. To avoid this, it's crucial to have a thorough consultation with the client to understand their expectations and preferences as well as making a note of these for the record. Take into account their facial features, natural brow shape, and hair flow to create a design that looks natural and suits their style and features. With that in mind, you will also need to manage client expectations throughout the design process.

Incorrect Stroke Direction
Microblading aims to mimic the natural flow of eyebrow hair, so getting the stroke direction right is critical. When strokes are placed against or without regard for the natural hair growth pattern, the results can look unnatural and patchy. This is especially important in the bulb and tail of the brow, where the hair changes direction. To avoid this mistake, study the client’s natural brow hair and map out the correct flow before beginning the procedure. Practicing different brow patterns and understanding hair growth tendencies will help refine this skill over time.

Incorrect Pressure Application

Applying too much or too little pressure during the microblading procedure can drastically affect the outcome. Too much pressure can cause trauma to the skin, leading to excessive bleeding, scarring, or pigment blowout—where pigment spreads beyond the intended strokes. On the other hand, too light of a hand may result in strokes that don’t retain pigment well and fade prematurely. The ideal pressure should be enough to reach the upper dermis without causing trauma. Practicing on latex skins and checking healed results from previous clients will help you fine-tune your technique.

Lack of Qualifications

Microblading requires skill and expertise to create undetectable and natural-looking results. Ensure that you are qualified and experienced enough to create customised designs that cater to your clients' unique features and preferences. It's also essential to be knowledgeable about alternative procedures, such as combination or ombre brows, that might be better suited for some clients. By having diverse skills and knowledge, you can best serve your clients' needs and establish a strong reputation for your business.
